Author, Educator, and Professional Violinist Brendan Nicholaus Slocumb To Speak in Brewster October 11th
Nickerson Memorial Lecture Sponsored by Brewster Ladies’ Library Association
BREWSTER, MA, July 9, 2025 — The Brewster Ladies’ Library Association has announced that author, educator, and professional violinist Brendan Nicholaus Slocumb will be the featured speaker for the Frances Mapes Nickerson Memorial Lecture on October 11, 2025, at the Brewster Baptist Church at 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM, with a book signing to follow each lecture.
Brendan Slocumb is the author of three novels: The Violin Conspiracy, Symphony of Secrets, and The Dark Maestro (May 2025). The Violin Conspiracy was a Good Morning America Book Club pick and was selected for several “One Book, One Community” reads. Brendan will share how music opened opportunities for him and in many ways saved his life. He incorporates music into his lecture and discusses his journey from musician to novelist, the power of music in storytelling, and the inspirations behind his work. Brendan believes that everyone can learn to appreciate and love music, and that it can be a new way of communicating, building bonds, and connecting with people who may look, sound, or speak differently.
Raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Brendan began to play the violin at age nine and graduated from the University of North Carolina (Greensboro) with a music education degree. For the past two decades, Brendan has taught music from kindergarten through twelfth grade and has been recognized as Teacher of the Year and a Nobel Teacher of distinction.
Brendan has performed with the Washington Metropolitan Symphony, the McLean Symphony, the Prince George’s Philharmonic, and the Alexandria Symphony. He has served as the concertmaster for the
NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs chamber music with members of the Alexandria Chamber Music Society. He also serves as an educational consultant for the Kennedy Center.
Brendan is among the less than 2% of professional musicians in the United States who are Black.
The annual Nickerson event is sponsored by the Brewster Ladies’ Library Association in memory and honor of Frances Mapes Nickerson, a long-time Brewster resident and library benefactor.
