November Art Show: Eileen Powers @ Brewster Ladies' Library
Nov 1 – Nov 30 all-day

For the month of November in 2017, the Brewster Ladies’ Library is pleased to present an art show by Eileen Powers, titled “Strangers and Familiar Places.”

Eileen Powers is an artist, photographer, graphic designer, and illustrator. She first learned to use the camera in high school on her mom’s 35-millimeter Argus. Today, she uses a combination of film and digital to create her work. In 2000, Eileen opened Javatime Design on Nantucket and has helped hundreds of clients with print projects, logos, and other graphic design projects. When need arose, she picked up the camera and began creating the images for graphic design projects. This love of photography grew, and now as an accomplished photographer, Eileen creates portraits, books, prints, and photography for all needs. She sells prints as Cape Coastal Photography on Etsy.

Eileen has studied with such notable photographers as Constantine Manos, Greg Miller, John Paul Caponigro, Stella Johnson, Amy Arbus and Terry Abrams. She attended the Maine Media Workshops, MassArt, Syracuse University, UMass Dartmouth and Caponigro Studios in Cushing, Maine. Eileen studied advertising and branding with Steve Cosmopulos, Willie Baronet, and John Waters. She holds a B.A. in creative studies, an M.A. in advertising design, and a graduate certificate in interactive media. She is currently applying to MFA programs and will be teaching more workshops in the future.

Eileen is interested in the beauty and abstraction of ordinary places and daily life. While she shoots formal portraits, she has a particular interest in environmental portraiture and documentary photography. Her ongoing projects are: Campers of Sandy Neck; Dennis Port: Sea of Change; Local Strangers; Carnival in Provincetown; and Matrix 9.

The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception at the Library on Saturday, November 4th from 3 to 5 PM.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Brewster Ladies’ Library. Please call the Library at (508) 896-3913 before coming, due to the exhibition room sometimes being in use for a program and not open for viewing.

December Art Show: “Trio – Ceramics, Wood, and Paint” @ Brewster Ladies' Library
Dec 1 – Dec 31 all-day

For the month of December in 2017, the Brewster Ladies’ Library is pleased to present “Trio – Ceramics, Wood and Paint,” an art exhibit inspired by our peninsula. This art show features the work of Brewster residents Annie Gerrity, Joe Swaluk, and Joan Swaluk.

Digging clay and making pots at Point of Rocks Beach is a fond childhood memory for ceramic artist Annie Gerrity, and this responsive medium has fascinated her ever since. Annie attended Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Craftsmen and Penland School of Crafts. She founded Ann Elizabeth Designs, a limited edition pottery studio in Williamtown, MA. Her work was sold in Craft Galleries throughout the US. Annie continues to create one-of-a-kind tiles as well as large scale murals. Her largest mural to date measures 5’ X 15’. Three years ago Annie moved to Brewster and began painting and sculpting. Her sculpture was featured in the Cape Cod Museum of Art’s “Looking Forward” exhibition in December 2016. Clay’s capacity to be transformed and it’s unpredictable results continue to gratify and challenge her. Creating pieces that nourish the soul and express her love of nature – especially Cape Cod – are the goal of this artist.

Joe Swaluk has been sculpting fish out of wood professionally for over 35 years. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists. His work has been shown in wildlife art and natural history museums throughout North America. Joe’s goal has always been to arouse awareness of the beauty of fish.

As a member of a family of artists, Joan Swaluk joined them upon retirement and has taken lessons with several artists on Cape Cod. She loves the translucency and flow of watercolor as well as the “forgiveness” and challenge of acrylic paint. Currently, her focus is on portraying light in her subject. Nature provides most of her inspiration.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception at the Library on Saturday, December 9th from 3 to 5 PM.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Brewster Ladies’ Library. Please call the Library at (508) 896-3913 before coming, due to the exhibition room sometimes being in use for a program and not open for viewing.
