Voices of Poetry – Off the Shelf

Celebrate National Poetry Month – and commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War with an afternoon of poetry & music.


The event – titled Voices of Poetry / Off the Shelf – will feature traditional poetry written at the time of (or inspired by) the War Between the States and the death of our beloved 16th President, as well as original poetry written & read by the following accomplished poets: Kevin Carey, Patricia Gomes, Judith Partelow  & Ayshia Stephenson.

Traditional & original music will be performed by the sax/flute player Bruce Abbott.


Kevin Carey teaches in the English Department at Salem State University in Salem, MA. His work can be found in several literary journals and Kevin has published one book of poetry, The One Fifteen to Penn Station (CavanKerry Press); and a chapbbok of fiction, The Beach People (Red Bird Chapbooks, 2014).


Patricia Gomes – Poet Laureate of New Bedford, MA - has been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies. She is the author of four chapbooks and performs her work extensively throughout New England. The former editor of Adagio Verse Quarterly, she received a 2007 Pushcart Prize nomination for her poem, One Man’s Claret and the Sandstar Poetry Award in 2008 for her poem.


Judith Partelow is a poet, journalist, theater/film/television actress, director and teacher of drama and English. Her poetry has appeared in more than seventeen publications, including Cape Cod Poetry Review, A Sense of Place, and World of Water, World of Sand. She has won prizes for her poetry and has been a featured poet at The Cultural Center of Cape Cod.


Ayshia Stephenson is an Assistant Professor of English at Salem State University. She is a poet and playwright, who fuses poetry and storytelling for a provocative and spiritual performance in her writing and on the stage.In 2011, Ayshia won the Silver Grace Notes Prize for Book-Length Poetry and received Imaginary Friend Press Full-Length Book Award for her poetry book, Black Hands of a Morning Calm.


Bruce Abbott – an accomplished sax & flute player - studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. . Bruce has performed in clubs and concerts throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. He is an active recording artist and has released more than a dozen CDs with the North Star Jazz Ensemble and Common Ground.


Voices of Poetry was founded by poet and poetry activist Neil Silberblatt.  VOP has presented a series of poetry & music events - featuring distinguished poets and talented musicians - at venues throughout Connecticut, New York and on the Cape,
