Young Readers Book Discussion
Thursday, May 24 - 3:30 p.m.
Younger readers are invited to attend a discussion of the book The Young Man
and the Sea by Rodman Philbrick on Thursday, May 24 at 3:30 p.m. in the library
auditorium.
The discussion will be led by library staff, the Eddy School librarian and a
teacher from the Laurel School. The discussion is geared for students in Grade 4
and up. All who have read the book are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be
served.
Discussion Questions
- What kind of relationship does Skiff have with Mr. Woodwell? How is this different from
Skiff's relationship with his father?
- In reflecting on his relationship with Tyler Croft, Skiff states "Can't fight him no more than you can fight the wind and
tide." What does he mean by this?
- When Mr. Woodwell shows Skiff the harpoon made by big Skiff, he refers to it as a memento. What does the harpoon symbolize?
- What are Skiff's mother's three rules? How does he break one of them?
- How would you describe Skiff's feelings when he caught the big fish? How does this differ from other fish he caught?
