"Saving Hemingway's Cuban Legacy: Preserving Finca Vigia"
Mary-Jo Adams, Executive Director Hemingway Preservation Foundation, Inc.
Hemingway lived and wrote in Cuba from 1938 to 1960 when Fidel Castro assumed power. The Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Old Man and the Sea (1952) was written in Cuba. The Hemingway Preservation Foundation hopes to restore and preserve Hemingway's home, Finca Vigia, and his papers, and personal artifacts located in the home. It may represent one of the strongest cultural bonds which currently exists between Cuba and North America.
Come and see photos of this remarkable villa, located just outside of Havana, and hear about this unique preservation effort.

Dan McCullough, Professor of Philosophy - Cape Cod Community College, columnist for The Cape Cod Times and dynamic speaker will share his insights in a discussion of The Old Man and the Sea

Program, in the Library Auditorium
"Tricks of the Trade" - Capt. Mike Orbe
Mike Orbe will present a family oriented, interactive program on marine life. As Captain of Seafari Expeditions for 14 years on Cape Cod, Capt. Mike has much to share about the wonderful creatures in our watery backyard. The program will be sprinkled with humorous anecdotes from his many years in the marine industry on every type of vessel, including: tugs, tankers, freighters, whale watching boats, and research vessels. Come to appreciate the wonder of the sea and sea creatures.

- The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Book discussion lead by Joan Lange, Library staff member and Steve Orvis. Joan and Steve are active contributors to the Library's monthly Book Discussion Group.

"Picture It!" by the Laurel School Students
The students of the Laurel School in Brewster have been reading Rodman Philbrick's book The Young Man and the Sea and present their original interpretations of the work through artwork and essays.

"Beyond Our Borders: Cuba Today" - Prof. Christine Esperson
Professor Christine Esperson, (B.A., M.A. Spanish from Inter American University) will present a slide show and commentary based on the International Studies Program 2003 visit to Cuba by faculty and students from Cape Cod Community College.

Presentation, in the Library Auditorium
"Bottom of the Barrel": A Panel Presentation by the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association
Lara Slifka-Cooperative Research Program Coordinator, Jeff Norgeot and Steve Tucker will discuss the policy and research questions relevant to Sea and River Herring. This Association is dedicated to conserving marine resources through sustainable fishing.

Thursday May 24 - 9:00a.m to 5:00 p.m. - "REEL- IT- IN!"
Final Day Activities
(various locations at the Brewster Ladies' Library)
* 10:00 a.m. Kids Costume Parade - Join the fun at 10:00 a.m. with a Kids Costume Parade. Dress as your favorite fish, fisherman (woman) or sea creature and make waves. The parade will leave the library and march to the Brewster General Store for "fishy" treats and a sing-a-long with Kathleen Healy. Craft activities at the library after the parade.
* 11:00 a.m. Cuban dance demonstration with Norah Bourbon. She has studied jazz, ballet, tap and flamenco dancing at The Valerie Buck Ballet and Dance Arts Center in West Chatham.
* 3:30 p.m. Book Discussion, in the Library Auditorium. Younger readers are invited to attend a discussion of the book The Young Man and the Sea by Rodman Philbrick.
The discussion will be led by library staff, the Eddy School librarian and a teacher from the Laurel School. The discussion is geared for students in Grade 4 and up. All who have read the book are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
* Food stations throughout the Library: desserts, appetizers, beverages.
* Prize drawings for the "Test Your Knowledge" contest.

* The Old Man and the Sea Oscar winner for Best Animated Short Film version
* Sacrifice Fly produced by Seth Rolbein. This documentary looks at life in Cuba through the eyes of a championship Cuban Little League team. Filmed on Cape Cod and in Cuba.
